…Says Experience from Failure is Critical to Fixing Nigeria

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has clarified why he is working with individuals from previous administrations, including those widely perceived as having contributed to Nigeria’s failures.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi stressed that he would not exclude anyone from the newly formed opposition coalition on the basis of past performance in government.

According to him, both success and failure offer vital lessons, and Nigeria needs the combined wisdom of all who have governed—whether they succeeded or failed.

“In fact, even some who have been in that government, their experience is critical,” Obi asserted when asked about reconciling his reformist posture with political alliances involving members of previous failed administrations.

“I can tell you one of the major companies in the world hired two people who have worked in failed companies because they can tell you why they failed,” he explained.

“You need the experience of those who have failed and those who have succeeded to move on, and I need everyone. It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system.”

Obi’s comment appears to be a direct response to criticism over his alignment with familiar political figures in the emerging opposition coalition, some of whom served in governments seen by many Nigerians as having underperformed or betrayed public trust.

Dismissing speculations about playing second fiddle in the next presidential election, Obi made it clear that he has not discussed any arrangement that would see him serve as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under the new coalition.

“There is nothing like that,” Obi stated firmly.

The former governor of Anambra State also reaffirmed his intention to contest the presidency in 2027, signaling his continued commitment to offering Nigerians an alternative vision for leadership.

His remarks come amid renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition figures exploring strategic partnerships to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

While critics have raised questions about the ideological consistency of these coalitions, Obi’s latest comments suggest a pragmatic approach rooted in learning from both success and failure to rebuild the country.
