The African Action Congress (AAC), Federal Capital Territory chapter, has described the February 19, 2026 election in the FCT as “a disaster for democracy,” alleging widespread voter suppression, intimidation, and manipulation.
In a press statement signed by its FCT Chairman, Agena Robert Ande, the party condemned what it termed a systematic effort to undermine the democratic process. The AAC accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of demonstrating “a blatant disregard for democracy and the rule of law.”
According to the statement, the low voter turnout recorded during the election was not accidental but the outcome of deliberate strategies designed to suppress the votes of residents. The party alleged that roadblocks and intimidation tactics deployed by agents linked to the minister created obstacles that prevented citizens from freely exercising their constitutional right to vote.
The AAC further referenced a remark allegedly made by the minister — “vote and allow me the rest” — describing it as indicative of contempt for democratic principles and an attempt to impose personal will on the electorate.
The party maintained that in areas where voter participation was relatively high, AAC candidates recorded strong performance and significant support. It argued that this trend demonstrated that FCT residents would opt for what it described as a “better future” if given an unhindered opportunity to vote.
The statement emphasized that the AAC played a leading role in mobilizing and energizing voters ahead of the election and pledged to continue championing democracy and good governance in the FCT.
Calling for accountability, the party demanded a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the election and urged the immediate resignation of the FCT Minister over his alleged role in undermining the process. It also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral system and to take decisive action against individuals found culpable of voter suppression.
“The people of the FCT will not be intimidated or silenced,” the statement concluded, reiterating the party’s commitment to demanding accountability and transparency from public office holders.
