Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, CON, has joined the nation in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a statesman who embodied national unity, discipline, and an unshakable commitment to Nigeria’s defence and sovereignty.
In an official condolence message personally signed and released from the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Dr. Matawalle paid glowing tribute to the late president, who passed away on Sunday in a London clinic after a prolonged illness.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces, I express our profound sorrow on the demise of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Matawalle stated, noting that Buhari’s passing marks the end of a defining chapter in Nigeria’s political and military evolution.
The Defence Minister recounted Buhari’s distinguished journey in national service—first as a soldier and later as a civilian leader. He noted that Buhari rose to the prestigious rank of General in the Nigerian Army and served as Military Head of State from 1983 to 1985. Decades later, he returned as a democratically elected president, leading Nigeria from 2015 to 2023.
“His contributions have made him a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s modern political landscape, and his legacy of honour, integrity, patriotism, and unwavering national service will forever be etched in the annals of our nation’s history,” Dr. Matawalle said.
The Minister emphasized the former president’s lifelong dedication to the values of national cohesion and disciplined leadership. “President Muhammadu Buhari embodied discipline and public service. His steadfast belief in a united and indivisible Nigeria inspired countless individuals, including many Nigerians who regarded him as a role model,” he noted.
Matawalle extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria, describing this moment as one of great loss and reflection for the nation.
“May Allah grant his soul Aljanatul Firdaus,” he prayed, invoking peace upon the soul of the late leader.
The Ministry of Defence, through Matawalle’s tribute, joins millions of Nigerians and global leaders in honouring the life, leadership, and indomitable spirit of Muhammadu Buhari — a man who, in both khaki and civilian garb, devoted his life to the service of Nigeria.
