In a ceremony marked by accolades and admiration, the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC) recently honoured Barrister Musa Onogo Idris, Director General of the Kogi State Office of the Public Defender and Citizen’s Rights Commission, with the International Peace Advocate Award for his exceptional commitment to peacebuilding, human rights protection, and social justice in Kogi State.
Held in Lokoja on Tuesday, the event highlighted the growing recognition of Barr. Idris’s work in promoting non-violent conflict resolution, safeguarding vulnerable populations, and advancing legal support for citizens who often lack access to justice.
The prestigious award is reserved for individuals who embody the UN-POLAC mission of fostering positive livelihoods and promoting a global culture of peace.
Barr. Idris has, over the years, championed various causes including alternative dispute resolution, protection of the girl child, and broader human rights initiatives that align with both the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and UNESCO’s Culture of Peace programme.

His leadership at the Kogi State Public Defender’s Commission has not only strengthened public confidence in justice delivery but has also promoted community harmony and civic inclusion.
In his acceptance remarks, Barr. Idris conveyed deep appreciation for the honour bestowed upon him. “I am humbled to receive this award, and I appreciate the recognition of my efforts in promoting peace and harmony,” he said. “I pledge to continue serving as a role model and promoting the values of peace, unity, and cooperation.”
Presenting the award, UN-POLAC Director General, Professor Halo B. Eton, extolled Barr. Idris’s virtues and professional achievements. “We recognize that you exemplify the qualities of a true peace advocate, and we are confident that you will continue to make a positive impact in your community,” he stated.
Professor Eton also commended Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, for entrusting the Public Defender’s Office to a professional of Barr. Idris’s calibre. According to him, the appointment demonstrates the administration’s commitment to good governance, justice reform, and human rights protection.
The recognition of Barr. Idris by an international body such as UN-POLAC reflects the growing relevance of grassroots peacebuilders in shaping inclusive governance and sustainable societal development.
As the region continues to grapple with complex social and legal challenges, voices like his offer a path toward equity, justice, and durable peace.
