The Labour Party (LP) has firmly dissociated itself from a planned protest scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 6, 2025, at the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning the public and security agencies that the protest is being orchestrated by impostors without the party’s consent.

In a press statement issued on Monday, August 5, 2025, and signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Senior Special Adviser on Media to Senator Nenadi Usman, Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, the party clarified that it has no knowledge of, nor affiliation with, the individuals behind the planned protest.

“The organisers are unknown to the party’s leadership, and the action lacks the approval and backing of the party,” the statement read. “Anyone participating in or promoting this protest is doing so without the consent of the Labour Party and should be seen as an impostor.”

The party’s statement comes amid growing tensions over the internal leadership crisis that has plagued the Labour Party, with factions loyal to former party chairman Barr. Julius Abure reportedly attempting to assert control through unofficial actions.

According to the party, the protest appears to be a response to INEC’s recent rejection of a list of candidates for upcoming bye-elections and local council polls submitted by the Abure-led faction. The current Labour Party leadership, headed by Senator Nenadi Usman, welcomed INEC’s decision, describing it as a reinforcement of the rule of law.

“The Labour Party received that decision with relief, knowing that INEC, as a responsible electoral umpire, would eventually proceed to accept and publish the authentic list submitted by the current, lawful leadership of the party,” the statement added.

Reiterating the legitimacy of its leadership, the party pointed to the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which it said clearly affirmed that the tenure of Barr. Abure and his group had expired on June 8, 2023. It urged INEC to act swiftly by publishing the valid list of candidates submitted by the duly recognized leadership and to update its records and platforms to reflect the court’s decision.

The party also issued a strong warning to the protest organisers, calling them “political impersonators and mischief-makers”, and urged security agencies to take immediate action.

“We call on all security agencies to take note, as the persons planning to stage a protest at INEC headquarters on 6th August 2025 are not representatives of the Labour Party. They are political impersonators and mischief-makers, and should be treated as such. We call for their immediate arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.”

The statement concluded with a rallying cry for party unity and commitment to democratic processes, reaffirming its stance against illegality and imposture.
