It was a day of excitement and hope in Onicha-Olona on Friday as Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, inaugurated a state-of-the-art Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre, a project many described as a turning point in the community’s march toward digital inclusion.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, Governor Oborevwori hailed the facility as more than just bricks and mortar, but a bridge to opportunities that will shape the future of Delta youths. He commended the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), which funded the project, and reaffirmed his administration’s determination to open up new paths for young people under the MORE Agenda.
“Today’s event is remarkable, as it brings a modern communication and learning hub right to the heart of our community,” the governor said. “This centre is not only about infrastructure; it is about empowering our people, closing the digital divide, and preparing our youths to thrive in the 21st century.”
The project, fully equipped with ICT tools, furniture, and accessories by the Ministry of Science and Technology, has already been lauded as a hub for learning, coding, app development, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Daniel Odigie, described it as a springboard for innovation, talent development, and creativity.
The centre’s establishment also carried a story of persistence. The governor paid tribute to Mrs. Diana Okonta, former NDIC Board Member, whose advocacy ensured the project’s take-off, as well as to former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who approved its first phase.
With 300 workstations and solar-powered backup, the ICT/CBT Centre promises to transform Onicha-Olona and surrounding communities into a knowledge hub. Local leaders echoed the governor’s optimism, with the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, describing it as “a gateway to effective education, innovation, and economic growth.”
Chairman of Aniocha North, Hon. Chinye Bazim, noted that the facility would be a game-changer for youth empowerment, while also highlighting ongoing government projects in the locality, including road works and the College of Nursing Science at Onicha-Uku.
For the host community, the project symbolizes more than development. “This centre is a beacon of innovation and empowerment,” said Sir Patrick Ejido, President-General of the Onicha-Olona Development Union, who pledged that the people would protect and sustain it.
The inauguration drew government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and an enthusiastic crowd of youths, all united by a shared belief that the project has opened a new chapter in the community’s story.
