…As Workers Allege Delayed Salaries, Poor Equipment, and Hostile Work Environment

Staff of AMAC Broadcasting Service Limited (ABSL), operators of Municipal FM 95.3 and the Karshi Community Radio Initiative, have petitioned the Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, over what they described as unresolved welfare and management challenges affecting the stations.

In an open letter signed by “Concerned Stakeholders and Staff of AMAC Broadcasting Service,” the workers raised issues ranging from delayed salaries and irregular appointments to allegations of financial mismanagement and poor workplace conditions under the current Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Ibrahim Yakubu Pam.

Concerns Raised

The letter alleged that some employees who joined the station between 2023 and 2024 only received formal appointment letters in January 2025, without backdating to reflect their earlier service. Staff also claimed that salary payments have been inconsistent, citing a situation where February 2025 salaries were not released until August of the same year.

The petition further raised concerns about the purchase of what they described as “substandard, second-hand equipment,” alleged indebtedness to contractors and service providers, and an overall “toxic work environment” in which employees risk dismissal for requesting their entitlements.

The letter also accused the management of insensitivity, alleging that dismissal letters were issued to some staff during a period of mourning in the council.

Call for Intervention

The petitioners appealed to the AMAC Chairman, who also serves as Board Chairman of ABSL, to establish an independent investigative panel to review the finances and operations of the broadcasting service, as well as to address outstanding staff entitlements and restore public confidence in the stations.

Awaiting Response

As at the time of filing this report, efforts to reach Mr. Ibrahim Yakubu Pam for his reaction to the allegations were unsuccessful. The AMAC authorities are also yet to issue an official response to the petition.

The situation at ABSL is being closely watched by stakeholders in Abuja’s media and community development space, with expectations that the council leadership will take steps to clarify the issues and chart a way forward for Municipal FM 95.3 and its sister station.
