A prominent Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North Central Zone, Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya, has applauded the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as “a clear testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s determination to right the wrongs of the past and ensure equitable representation across the country.”

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Hon. Ajiya said the decision of the National Council of State to unanimously approve the nomination of Professor Amupitan from Kogi State, North Central Nigeria, reflects the President’s recognition of the region’s contributions to national development and his commitment to fairness, inclusion, and justice in governance.

“The appointment of Professor Amupitan is not just a victory for the North Central region but for all Nigerians who believe in competence, merit, and equity,” Hon. Ajiya stated. “For the first time, the North Central has produced the INEC Chairman, and this is a strong signal that President Tinubu is intentional about correcting historical imbalances and giving every part of the country a true sense of belonging.”

He described the newly appointed INEC boss as an accomplished scholar, a man of integrity, and a patriot whose legal and academic background has prepared him for the enormous task of deepening democracy in Nigeria. Hon. Ajiya expressed confidence that Professor Amupitan will bring professionalism, transparency, and accountability to the management of elections in the country.

“Professor Amupitan is a man of honour who has earned the respect of his peers through decades of service in academia and the legal profession,” the APC chieftain said. “I have no doubt that he will justify the confidence reposed in him by the President, the National Council of State, and indeed, the entire North Central zone.”

Hon. Ajiya also called on Nigerians, particularly citizens from the North Central region, to continue to support President Tinubu’s administration, noting that the government’s ongoing reforms are laying the foundation for a stronger, more prosperous, and equitable nation.

“We understand that the current reforms may appear tough, but they are necessary sacrifices for the long-term stability and economic recovery of our country,” he noted. “President Tinubu is rebuilding the foundation of this nation, and I urge the North Central and all Nigerians to be patient and hopeful, because there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

The APC chieftain further urged the new INEC Chairman to uphold his reputation as a man of integrity and to ensure that under his leadership, the electoral body delivers on its constitutional mandate to conduct free, fair, and credible elections that reflect the true will of the people.

“This appointment is not just a personal honour but a call to national service,” Hon. Ajiya emphasized. “The credibility of our democracy rests on the shoulders of INEC. Professor Amupitan must not betray the confidence reposed in him and in the North Central zone. He must stand firm, resist political pressure, and work to restore the people’s trust in our electoral system.”

Hon. Ajiya concluded by expressing optimism that with credible leadership at INEC and the ongoing national reforms under President Tinubu, Nigeria is on the path to genuine democratic consolidation and sustainable progress.

“President Tinubu’s inclusive leadership style and commitment to restructuring governance through fairness, justice, and competence are already yielding results,” he said. “The appointment of Professor Amupitan is another proof that the President means well for all parts of the country. The North Central and all Nigerians should rally behind him to move the nation forward.”
