The National Coordinator of The Obidient Movement Globally, Dr. Tanko Yunusa, has rejected the outcome of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, describing it as a “brazen assault” on Nigeria’s democracy and alleging widespread violence, voter suppression and electoral manipulation.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Dr. Yunusa said the February 21, 2026 election was not merely a political setback for the movement but a fundamental attack on democratic values.
“We address you today with a heavy heart, filled with both profound disappointment and righteous anger,” he declared. “The results of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election are not just a political setback; they are a brazen assault on the very foundations of our democracy.”
The Obidient Movement had thrown its support behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dr. Moses Paul, popularly known as Dr. Mo, mobilizing supporters across the council in what Dr. Yunusa described as an unprecedented coalition for change inspired by the vision of a new Nigeria.
According to him, the movement was confident of victory before the official declaration of results. “We were clearly ahead in the polls, and the will of the people was undeniable,” he said.
However, he alleged that the declared victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was “not earned at the ballot box” but “manufactured through a campaign of violence, intimidation, and blatant manipulation.”
Dr. Yunusa accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of contributing to voter apathy by dividing polling units without adequate public information, thereby making it difficult for voters to locate their voting centres. He said many voters left in frustration, resulting in what he described as a seven percent turnout.
He nonetheless credited Peter Obi for mobilising support within a short time of joining the ADC, noting that his call for supporters to vote led to a marginal increase in turnout compared to previous FCT local government elections.
Central to the Movement’s outrage was the killing of one of its agents, Mr. Musa Abubakar, also known as Dege, who Dr. Yunusa said was murdered at his post in Gwagwa polling unit while resisting attempts by hoodlums to hijack ballot boxes.
“Our agents on the ground were systematically targeted. They were harassed, threatened, and intimidated in a desperate attempt to silence them,” he said. “Tragically, this campaign of fear culminated in the ultimate price: one of our most dedicated agents… was brutally murdered at his post for resisting a daring attempt by hoodlums to hijack ballot boxes and subvert the will of voters.”
He added that fear spread among other agents after witnessing the attack, leading some to flee their locations. The Movement, he explained, deliberately refrained from escalating the situation publicly at the time in order not to further endanger its remaining agents.
“Let me be clear: Mr. Musa’s death is not just a statistic. He was a husband, a father, a son, and a Nigerian who believed in a better future. His blood is on the hands of those who orchestrated this electoral fraud and the thugs they hired to enforce it,” Dr. Yunusa stated.
He commended Dr. Moses Paul and his team for visiting the bereaved family in solidarity and providing support.
The Obidient Movement condemned what it described as the theft of the people’s mandate, insisting that AMAC voters had chosen a new direction with Dr. Mo and the ADC.
“Their voice was stolen in broad daylight. We will not stand by and watch our democracy be desecrated,” he said.
The Movement demanded a full and transparent review of the election results and called on security agencies to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the violence, particularly the killers of Mr. Musa.
Dr. Yunusa further appealed to Nigerians, civil society organisations and the international community to condemn what he termed electoral injustice and to stand in defence of democratic integrity.
“We urge INEC to act immediately to address these grave allegations and restore the sanctity of the ballot,” he said. “This is no longer about one election. This is a fight for the soul of our nation.”
