A crisis may be brewing within the Labour Party following allegations by the party’s candidate for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Obol Omini Ebri, that some top party officials are plotting to unlawfully replace him as the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an emergency public statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, Ebri accused the party’s presidential candidate, Chibuzo Okereke, alongside senior officials at the party’s national secretariat, of allegedly orchestrating moves to substitute his candidature despite his emergence through what he described as a lawful and transparent process.
The embattled candidate appealed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Inspector-General of Police, party members, and the general public to intervene and monitor developments surrounding what he termed an attempt to undermine democratic processes within the party.
According to him, he successfully completed all requirements stipulated by the party, including the purchase of nomination forms, participation in the screening exercise, and subsequent clearance by the party’s screening committee.
Ebri further claimed that following the completion of the nomination process, his name was officially uploaded and published by the Labour Party as its candidate for the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, making any attempt to alter his status contrary to both party procedures and electoral regulations.
He alleged that certain officials within the party were seeking to replace him with another aspirant, whom he described as a “late entrant” into the race, warning that such a move could trigger legal and political consequences.
“The mandate was earned through due process and cannot be traded or transferred through backdoor arrangements,” he stated.
The candidate maintained that he had neither withdrawn from the contest nor violated any provision of the party’s constitution or code of conduct that would justify a substitution of his candidature.
He described the alleged move as an attack on internal party democracy and the political rights of voters in the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, insisting that any attempt to substitute his name without following due process would be resisted through all lawful means.
Ebri called on INEC and security agencies to closely monitor activities surrounding the nomination process and ensure strict compliance with the Electoral Act and established democratic procedures.
As of press time, neither the Labour Party national leadership nor its presidential candidate, Dr. Okereke, had issued an official response to the allegations.
The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of internal party processes across political parties as preparations gradually gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
