UMUAHIA, Abia State — Organised Labour and Civil Society Organisations in Bende Local Government Area have adopted Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, popularly known as OFUJI, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election in Bende Federal Constituency.
The decision was reached at the weekend, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Toxydon Hotel and Suites, Umuagu Ibeku, Umuahia, where representatives of Labour and civil society groups described the development as the beginning of a new political engagement centred on people-oriented representation, accountability, workers’ welfare and grassroots development.
Speaking on behalf of the Organised Labour Movement, Comrade Mayor Emeka Joseph Ugboaja, Head of Information, National Union of Electricity Employees, said the endorsement reflected Labour’s decision to support “one of its own.”
Ugboaja recalled the position of the late NLC Secretary-General, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, who, according to him, had encouraged Labour stakeholders to support Anyaso’s aspiration.
“We don’t want people who will come and give us bad roads. Our late leader said, ‘Go and deliver OFUJI,’ because he believes so much that his time has come,” he said.
He subsequently announced the decision to consolidate Labour and civil society structures across Bende behind the Labour Party candidate.
“Today, we have done it that Dr. Chima Anyaso is the only candidate for the Organised Labour Movement and Civil Society,” Ugboaja declared.
Also speaking, Comrade Chile Agubuche, who represented the NLC General Secretary, said Labour House had directed its structures to mobilise across Bende in support of the candidate.
“This Forum has adopted you as our candidate for the 2027 Bende Federal Constituency election,” Agubuche said.
He said the proposed partnership would extend beyond election-day mobilisation to include grassroots engagement, voter education and community-based campaigns.
Comrade Promise Onwukwe, Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly, said the gathering demonstrated the confidence that Labour stakeholders had placed in Anyaso and reaffirmed workers’ commitment to the Labour Party.
The Civil Society Organisations were represented by Comrade C. E. Achonye, Esq., Executive Director, Women in Politics Network, who pointed to Anyaso’s activities through the Cedes Foundation as evidence of his commitment to humanitarian intervention and youth and women empowerment.
Achonye said the participating CSOs would support voter sensitisation and community outreach, while also requesting logistical assistance, including a vehicle, to facilitate town-hall engagements across Bende.
Responding, Anyaso thanked the Labour and civil society stakeholders for the endorsement, describing it as a significant moment in the political history of the constituency.
“In the history of House of Representatives and the Labour Union, they are coming together to adopt a candidate, and that candidate is me,” he said.
The Labour Party chieftain also commended organised labour for its support for the administration of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, saying the same standard of performance would guide his own representation if elected.
“I assure you that I will not let the Labour Union down. The same way our Governor has performed in Abia State, that is the same way I will perform in Bende,” Anyaso pledged.
The endorsement is expected to intensify political activities in Bende ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as Labour and civil society groups begin translating the resolution into grassroots mobilisation and voter engagement.
