ABUJA, NIGERIA — A major opposition party in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed reports claiming that the party lacks governorship candidates in 12 states ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the reports as false propaganda designed to undermine its growing national political momentum.
The party, in a statement issued on Saturday, by the Office of the National Publicity Secretary and signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director Esq., insisted that it has duly nominated governorship candidates in all 28 states where governorship elections are expected to hold in 2027.
The NDC said the reports circulating in sections of the media and across social media platforms were intended to create a misleading impression about its level of preparedness and organisational strength ahead of the elections.
The party maintained that it is fully prepared for the 2027 elections, with candidates, political structures and supporters across the country.
It further rejected suggestions that it is a regional political platform, stressing that it has structures and supporters in all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Seeking to put the controversy to rest, the party identified its governorship candidates in the 12 states reportedly cited in the alleged misinformation.
They include Senator Kabiru Marafa in Zamfara State; Rtd. Rear Admiral Ibrahim Sanusi Kasim in Borno State; Hon. John Odey in Cross River State; Babanta Michael Okon in Akwa Ibom State; Nwofe Boniface in Ebonyi State; Yakubu Solomon Ndam in Plateau State; Ilu-Barde Aliyu in Katsina State; Alhaji Umar Usman Besse in Kebbi State; Jonga Yahaya Gabakau in Yobe State; Dutse Aminu Sani in Jigawa State; Prof. Yahaya Mohammed Sani in Taraba State; and Abdu Sidi Bomi in Niger State.
The party argued that the list demonstrated that it was not only active in the affected states but had also completed the process of presenting candidates for the governorship contests.
NDC Challenges Media To Verify Political Claims
Reacting to the reports, the NDC urged media organisations, journalists, bloggers and digital content creators to verify political claims before publishing or amplifying them.
The party said the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process depended significantly on responsible journalism and accurate dissemination of information.
“Journalism thrives on truth, not rumours,” the party stated, warning that the circulation of unverified information could erode public confidence in the media and the democratic process.
The NDC said it would remain focused on issue-based politics and would not be distracted by what it described as sponsored falsehoods intended to slow down its preparations for 2027.
The party also used the opportunity to position itself as a political alternative to the established parties, arguing that Nigerians were tired of what it called the “old order” and “recycled failures.”
According to the NDC, its 2027 campaign would be anchored on credible candidates, a clear manifesto and commitments to tackling insecurity, creating jobs and strengthening accountability in governance.
The party consequently called on Nigerians to join its political movement, declaring that “the rescue mission has started.”
