Ugwuanyi Intervens into Umode, Oruku 6-yr Communal Clash
Respite may have come for the warring Umode and Oruku communities in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, following Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s intervention the six years long conflagration, that had claimed lives and properties worth millions of Naira.
South East Voice’s checks reveal that natives of the affected communities live in perpetual fear of reprisal attacks allegedly occasioned by the ambition of certain individuals who want to lay claim to a piece land, setting the stage for a protracted showdown.
Hostilities came to a head last Saturday when unknown arsonists razed the Parish House of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Umuode, but the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Chris Ikegwuonu, was away on missionary activities when the hoodlums struck.
South East Voice investigations showed that the incident, which sent shocking chills down Ugwuanyi’s spine, prompted an unscheduled visit to the scene at Umuode, where he later addressed community members including the former Minister of Power, Professor Bath Nnaji.
The governor, according to a Vanguard report, declared that Enugu State Government will thoroughly investigate circumstances surrounding the act with a view to do the needful in order to restore lasting peace in the areas.
Speaking to South East Voice at the parish house, the embattled parish priest, Fr. Ikegwuonu, lamented the attack even as he revealed that he lost everything in the house to the inferno.
At both communities, there was mild drama as the governor addressed the community members occasioned by women wailing uncontrollably, urging the governor to rescue them from impending attacks.
Recall that Governor Ugwuanyi had, penultimate Monday, set up a Commission of Enquiry, headed by Justice Fredrick Obieze, on Okwojo-Ngwo civil disturbances that led to the killing of an indigene, Ejimofor Ozongwu.
