AASU Congratulates African Leaders on mRNA Vaccine Hub Designation For the Continent

The Presidency of the All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) has congratulated congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and his counterparts President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, President Macky Sall of Senegal, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Kais Saied of Tunisia for official designation as mRNA vaccine production hub for the Africa continent.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the AASU President, Comrade Osisiogu Osikenyi E.

AASU said “We are elated to learn that the WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at the European Union – African Union summit in Brussels designated Nigeria, Egypt, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia the first six countries that will receive the technology needed to produce mRNA vaccines on the African continent.

“In line with quest for self-reliance in Africa and reversal of capital flight viz nearly $100m (£70m) to be spent by 2030 to import vaccines; hence the rationale to set up Africa own vaccine manufacturing plants as part of its wider plan to tackle COVID -19 and other diseases in the country.

“This feat is indeed recognition of the capacity of Nigeria to lead not just the fight against COVID-19 on the continent, but her quest for Industrialization and Self-Reliance under your sterling administration.

“Once again, we congratulate the WHO Africa COVID-19 Hub Designates; as we reiterate confidence in their capacity to deliver”, the statement read.
