Emergence Of President Tinubu As ECOWAS Chairman Will Mark New Era Of Regional Integration — ALGON National President Hon Alabi
The National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria Hon Kolade David Alabi has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR on his emergence as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States at it’s just concluded meeting in Guinea-Bissau, weekend.
He maintained that Nigeria’s President’s emergence as ECOWAS Chairman will mark new era of regional integration aimed at promoting massive development that will directly affect West African local communities.
The ALGON National President spoke with select journalist on Monday in Lagos while reacting to the news of the emergence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the coveted seat.
He said that the “simultaneous emergence of President Tinubu and its development import to the union will set a whole new vista of regional renaissance.”
He added that while ECOWAS exemplifies the only instrument for effective sub-national re-armament for a virile, stronger and united West African sub-region, institutions like ALGON and other local associations in West Africa will support his leadership.
He said that ALGON was specifically enthralled with the announcement due to it’s several engagements already gaining traction in the West Africa through the United Cities for Local Government UCLGA-Africa, African Union, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), National Association of Local Government of Ghana and other numerous institutions across the fringes of ECOWAS.
He equally noted that Association of Local Governments of Nigeria under his leadership has been networking and promoting it’s interests thereby playing vital role in canvassing for strengthening the institutional frameworks for local governance through capacity development of local authorities in the areas of good governance, transparency, accountability, and combatting corruption.
It was his view that leveraging on the recent appointment, the Associations will seek closer support of the Community under President Tinubu to fosters more inclusive approach towards ECOWAS citizens participation in local decision making process, a strategy he insisted should be bottom up to shore up a sustained exposure of upcoming leaders as a breeding ground for quality representation.
The National President said that ALGON will work with the ECOWAS new leadership and position it’s self as central liaison in promoting, decentralizaion and supporting consultations and dialogue between central and local authorities on all areas of concerns for both local governments, area councils, as well as it’s municipalities
Hon Alabi concluded by expressing optimism on the new leadership of ECOWAS and how it can raise the bar of the living standards of its peoples, maintain and enhance economic stability, foster relations among member states, and contribute to the progress and development of the African continent.
