Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the Nigeria‘s 2023 general elections, Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to reports on the plans of the Lagos State Government to bury EndSARS victims, picking wholes in the government’s explanations on the actual victims.

A document had revealed that the Lagos State Government approved the sum of N61, 285,000.00 for the mass burial of the 103 EndSARS victims of the year 2020.

In a letter titled ‘Letter of No Objection. Mass Burial for the 103, the Year 2020 Endsars Victims’, dated July 19th, with reference number LA/PPA/NO ONJ/VOL22/213, addressed to the permanent secretary, Ministry of Health, Alausa, Ikeja and signed by the Director General of the Lagos State Public Procurement Agency, Mr Onafowote Fatai Idowu, the government awarded the contract TOS Funerals Limited.

However, the state government had explained that “For the records, the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit (SEHMU) picked up bodies in the aftermath of #EndSARS violence and community clashes at Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo and Ajah areas of Lagos State, including a jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison. The 103 casualties mentioned in the document were from these incidents and NOT from Lekki Toll-gate as being alleged. For the avoidance of doubt, no body was retrieved from the Lekki Toll Gate incident.

“In the aftermath of the #EndSARS violence, the office of the Chief Coroner invited members of the public Throughout public adverts and announcement who had lost loved ones or whose relatives had been declared missing between 19th and 27th October 2020 from various clashes as mentioned above, to contact the department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to help with identification of these casualties deposited in State-owned morgues. Relatives were to undergo DNA tests for identification purposes. It is important to state categorically that nobody responded to claim any of the bodies.” Lagos state Contract Letter for Mass Burial Of 103 Endsars Victims

However, Sowore revealed that Lagos State officials and the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, “have been arguing all day on the best way to admit to the letter”, that it was not for burial of victims of the alleged Lekki Toll Gate massacre in October 20, 2020.

In his reaction, Sowore wrote, “The govt of Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari denied killing #EndSARS protesters in October of 2020, we’ve always maintained that they massacred protesters and hid their bodies across Lagos state.

“Here is a legit document of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu @jidesanwoolu of Lagos contracted a funeral company -TOS Funerals Ltd- to bury Endsars “victims” in mass graves.

“These heinous crimes will not go unpunished. #RevolutionNow”.

In another tweet, Sowore said, “Lagos state officials and @jidesanwoolu have been arguing all day on the best way to admit to the letter below, which is legit by the way, one of them told me privately that their problem is calling it “LekkiTollGateMassacre” because it would mean LekkiTollGate would become a monument and they badly want to reopen it for business, they prefer that it is called #ENDSARSLAGOSMASSACRE. Wicked people! #RevolutionNow”.
