Fully represented as the Koffi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center (KAIPTC) presents “Women, Youth And Violent Extremism and Terrorism Course”, the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has disclosed that the students body is ready to work and collaborate with any firm whose sole aim is to fight and prevent violent extremism in our society.
The national Ex-Officio 1 of NANS, Comrade Muniretu Isah made this known at the event while equally advocating for good parenting that could properly guide children away from any form of violence.
At the ongoing training in Abuja, the courses of Extremism and Terrorism are being discussed alongside their prevention.
According Comrade Isah, the term Extremism refers to the rejection of generally accepted societal beliefs, norms and way of life in preference to an alternative.
โViolent Extremism is described as advocating, engaging, preparing or otherwise supporting ideologically motivated or justified violenceโ, the NANS national representative said.
On prevention of violent extremism, Comrade Muniretu Isah noted that โViolent extremism is a threat to peace and tolerance. It is not enough to counter it, we must prevent it because no one is born a violent extremist; but they are made and fueled.
โDisarming the process of radicalization must begin with dialogue and respect to human rights and the rule of law. Education is a powerful tool to build learners’ resilience to violent extremism and mitigate the drivers of this phenomena.
โIt helps strengthen their commitment to non-violence and peace, in particular by addressing hateful and violent narratives. This crucial work starts as early as possible, on the benches of schoolsโ, she said.
The National Ex-Officio 1 added that โA lot was discussed and a lot was learned, the leadership of NANS is ready to work and collaborate with any firm whose sole aim is to fight and prevent Violent Extremism in our society.
โNANS also urges good parenting as children only know what they see or hear, parents should learn to deviate from any form of violence when the children are present.
โEducation is a right, not a privilegeโ, she observed.
