Ex-Chief Press Secretary Calls for Urgent Solution Amid Escalating Economic Crisis in Northern Nigeria
In the face of mounting economic challenges, the governments of Northern Nigeria may have found themselves at a crossroads as the region grapples with soaring food prices, leaving ordinary citizens struggling to make ends meet.
Ibrahim Musa Kallah, former Chief Press Secretary to the immediate past Deputy Governor of Katsina State, has sounded the alarm, urging action to minimise the suffering of the citizens in the region.
He spoke shortly after a meeting with the executive of Arewa Youths for Effective Leadership in the state.
Kallah, who is the National President of the group, highlighted the stark reality, saying that a single bag of maize now commands a staggering ₦95,000, while local rice prices have surged to ₦75,000.
He then noted that these exorbitant costs placed basic staples out of reach for most Nigerians in the North, even those with full-time employment as their salary cannot pay for a bag of rice.
He lamented that families are forced to ration meals, and some are resorting to sleeping without food.
While pleading for action on the part of the governments in the region, Kallah emphasized that the crisis extends beyond mere economics, observing that insecurity looms large, with rampant kidnapping and cattle rustling plaguing the region.
He said that northern Governors must urgently address these issues to restore peace and stability.
Kallah insisted that their decisive action can alleviate the suffering of millions of suffering people and pave the way for lasting solutions.
