Delta State Makes Significant Progress in Containing Cholera Outbreak – Official
The Delta State Government has successfully curtailed the spread of cholera, which had ravaged the state since February this year.
According to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the government’s swift response and measures have led to a significant reduction in cases and deaths.
Dr. Onojaeme disclosed that the state has recorded a total of 138 cases of cholera, with seven deaths, mostly young children, since the outbreak began. However, he noted that no casualties have been recorded in the second and third epidemics.
The Commissioner attributed the success to the government’s efforts in educating the public on the causes of the disease, providing water purification tablets, and promoting hand washing and good hygiene practices.
He emphasized that maintaining hygiene is crucial in eliminating cholera from the environment, particularly in high-risk areas such as villages along the water bank.
With the disease now under control, the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiology unit continues to monitor the situation, ensuring that the state remains vigilant in preventing future outbreaks.
