Nigeria is currently grappling with widespread protests and demonstrations, sparked by a combination of factors including economic hardship, hunger, and anger under President Bola Tinubu administration. However, the Presidency’s response to these protests has been widely criticized as inadequate and tone-deaf.

Prof Chris Mustapha Nwaokobia Jnr, Convener of the CountryFirst Movement, has joined the chorus of voices condemning the Presidency’s attempts to silence protesters through Gestapo-style invasions of homes and offices, scapegoating, and gaslighting.

In his scathing critique, Prof Nwaokobia Jnr. argued that these tactics will not address the underlying issues fueling the protests, but rather exacerbate the situation.

“The Presidency’s approach to the protests is a classic case of treating the symptoms rather than the disease,” Nwaokobia Jnr. said. “By blaming external enemies and scapegoating certain groups, the government is avoiding the hard truths about its own failures and shortcomings.”

Nwaokobia Jnr. pointed out that the government’s profligacy, waste, and kleptomania have exacerbated the suffering of Nigerians, and that the protests are a direct result of this.

He cited examples such as the 21 billion naira spent on the VP’s residence, the 80 billion naira spent on SUVs for lawmakers, and the 150 million dollars spent on a new presidential jet.

“These are not just isolated incidents of waste and excess, but a pattern of behavior that shows a callous disregard for the welfare of Nigerians,” Nwaokobia Jnr. said. “The government needs to take responsibility for its actions and start working towards a holistic overhaul of its policies.”

His opinion piece also emphasized the need for restructuring, so that the federal government truly serves the interests of all Nigerians, rather than being beholden to ethnic or regional interests. Nwaokobia Jnr. argued that this is essential for creating a more just and equitable society, where the needs of citizens are prioritized above all else.

“Restructuring is not a panacea for all our problems, but it is a necessary step towards creating a more functional and effective government,” Nwaokobia Jnr. said. “The current system is broken, and we need to start thinking outside the box to find solutions.”

Nwaokobia Jnr. concluded by expressing hope that the President will listen to reason and work towards creating a new Nigeria, where the needs of citizens are prioritized above all else.

“We need a President who will listen to the voices of Nigerians, and work towards creating a better future for all of us,” Nwaokobia Jnr. said. “We need a President who will confront the hard truths about our country, and work towards finding solutions. We need a President who will put Nigeria first.”
