A devastating attack on the 330kV Lokoja-Gwagwalada transmission line 1 has left Nigeria’s power infrastructure reeling. Vandals struck in the early hours of Saturday, November 9, 2024, disrupting bulk power transmission and dealing a significant blow to the nation’s grid stability.
Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) engineers attempted to re-energize the line but were thwarted by repeated tripping. A thorough inspection revealed the shocking extent of the damage: transmission towers T306, T307, and T308 had been vandalized, with two spans of aluminum conductor stolen.
This brazen act of sabotage is the latest in a disturbing trend of attacks on Nigeria’s transmission network. The Gwagwalada area has been particularly vulnerable, with multiple incidents reported in recent months.
“We are facing a serious challenge,” TCN warned in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah. “Vandalism of power installations is a disservice to us all and undermines efforts to strengthen the nation’s transmission system.”
Despite the setback, TCN is working tirelessly to restore power transmission. The company is sourcing replacement aluminum conductors and urges the public to join forces with security operatives to combat the scourge of vandalism.
The stakes are high, and Nigeria’s power future hangs in the balance. Will the authorities be able to stem the tide of sabotage and keep the lights on? Only time will tell.
