The recent protest organized by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Akida Forum, led by Musa Mahmoud, has raised questions about political motivations and accountability. The group demanded an investigation into Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence, amid allegations linking him to banditry in Zamfara. However, it appears that the underlying motives are rooted in political rivalry rather than genuine concern for public safety.
Governor Dauda Lawal, not Matawalle, bears primary responsibility for addressing the security crisis as the current chief security officer of Zamfara. Lawal should focus on implementing effective strategies to combat insecurity and provide dividends of democracy to the people.
Matawalle’s previous role as Director General of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s campaign in the North West reportedly fueled envy among some political figures. Allegations against Matawalle were investigated by the National Security Adviser’s office, which found no evidence to support claims of his involvement in banditry.
A Kano High Court issued a restraining order against Governor Lawal, prohibiting him from continuing the smear campaign against Matawalle. Despite this, Lawal continues to tarnish Matawalle’s reputation without substantiating evidence.
The public must remain vigilant against misleading narratives and recognize the broader implications of such political maneuvers. The focus of accountability in Zamfara should shift towards Governor Dauda Lawal, who now holds the reins of security in the state.
