Tragic Stampedes Over Palliatives Highlight Deepening Poverty in Nigeria – PRP

Spread the love

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has expressed profound condolences to the families and communities affected by the tragic stampedes that occurred during recent food distribution events in Ibadan, Oyo State, as well as in Abuja and Anambra.

These incidents, which resulted in multiple fatalities, underscore the severe socio-economic challenges facing many Nigerians.

In a press statement, the PRP highlighted the chaotic scenes at these gatherings as a stark reflection of the extreme poverty and desperation prevalent in Nigerian society. The party attributed these conditions to years of systemic misgovernance, which have exacerbated the plight of the most vulnerable citizens.

“The scenes of chaos and panic at these gatherings underline the extreme poverty and desperation that exist in our society—conditions that have been exacerbated by years of persistent and systemic misgovernance,” the statement read.

The PRP called for a moment of serious reflection by all levels of government and society at large, emphasizing that the frequent occurrence of such tragedies indicates a broader societal crisis. The party criticized the Federal Government and President Ahmed Bola for policies that have intensified the hardships faced by millions of Nigerians, particularly following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

“The PRP holds the Federal Government and its leadership, particularly President Ahmed Bola, accountable for the escalating hardships that millions of Nigerians are now enduring,” the statement continued. “Such anti-people policies have plunged countless families into abject poverty, forcing them to make desperate choices just to survive.”

The party urged Nigerian leaders to take immediate and concrete actions to address the root causes of these preventable incidents, advocating for policies that protect human dignity and life. The PRP also extended Christmas greetings to Christian communities, urging them to pray for the souls of those who lost their lives in the stampedes.

“We wish all our Christian brethren across the Nation a Merry Christmas and beg of them all to pray for the repose of the souls of the unfortunate Nigerians who lost their lives in trying to get what to eat in children’s funfairs and distribution of palliatives,” the statement added.

The PRP called for the reversal of policies implemented by the Tinubu Administration and demanded sustainable measures to alleviate poverty and meet the basic needs of Nigerians. The party also urged the electorate to vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in future elections, citing their failure to deliver on promises over the past 26 years.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families who are grieving during this difficult time,” concluded Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, Acting National Publicity Secretary of the PRP.
