A crisis is brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as lawyers to Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya, an aspirant for the position of National Vice Chairman, North Central Zone, have accused the PDP FCT State Publicity Secretary of attempting to impose a candidate on the party ahead of the party’s zonal congress.
In a letter, addressed to the Zonal National Chairman of the PDP and copied to both the national chairman and the FCT state chairman, dated January 20, 2025, S.C. Uchendu Chambers, solicitors to Hon. Ajiya, alleged that the PDP FCT State Publicity Secretary and her cohorts are trying to undermine the democratic process and impose an unpopular candidate on the zone.
The lawyers had in their earlier Letter of Complaint dated 13th January, 2025, stated that their client, Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya, briefed them that he is contesting for the position of Zonal Chairman of PDP North Central Zone, as a result of the party zoning the position of Zonal Chairman of North Central and Ex-Officio to FCT, Abuja and that he has duly paid and obtained his Expression of Interest and Nomination Form for the position.
“We had expected to receive your urgent intervention on this matter of serious concern, but same is not forthcoming,” the letter reads in parts. “It is therefore relevant to inform you that the said PDP FCT State Publicity Secretary and her cohorts have now decided that apart from their selected and imposed candidate, all other candidates must be screened out by all means.”
The lawyers argued that the alleged plot is aimed at giving the preferred candidate an undue advantage over Hon. Ajiya and undermining the democratic process and the party’s constitution.
“This plan will not be accepted by our client, and should be halted,” the letter stated. “We as solicitors stand by our client’s resolve to pursue his political aspiration legitimately and ensure that democracy prevails in the end.”
The lawyers called on the PDP Zonal Chairman to intervene swiftly and ensure that justice is done in the electoral process. “Anything short of that will not only be resisted but also be legally challenged and redressed,” they warned.
The accusation is the latest in a series of controversies to rock the PDP in recent times. The party has been grappling with internal conflicts and power struggles, which have threatened to undermine its chances in future elections.
As the crisis deepens, it remains to be seen how the PDP leadership will respond to the allegations and address the concerns of its members.
The party is expected to take urgent steps to restore democracy and fairness within its ranks if it hopes to regain the trust of its members and the Nigerian electorate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
