In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Dr. Okey Ezugwu, a retired Assistant Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has called for a complete overhaul of the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA) to tackle the growing insecurity in border regions.
Dr. Ezugwu emphasized the need for a more effective and efficient BCDA to ensure the safety and development of border communities.
Dr. Ezugwu pointed out that the current structure and operations of the BCDA are inadequate to address the multifaceted security challenges facing Nigeria’s border communities.
He highlighted issues such as poor funding, lack of coordination with other security agencies, and insufficient infrastructure as major obstacles hindering the agency’s ability to fulfill its mandate.
The legal expert stressed the importance of strengthening the BCDA’s capacity to effectively monitor and secure Nigeria’s extensive border regions.
He suggested that a comprehensive reform of the agency should include increased funding, better training for personnel, and enhanced collaboration with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Police, and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Dr. Ezugwu also called for the inclusion of border communities in the decision-making process, noting that their input is crucial for the success of any security and development initiatives.
He argued that local residents possess valuable knowledge of the terrain and security dynamics, which can aid in the formulation of more effective strategies to combat insecurity.
Additionally, Dr. Ezugwu recommended the implementation of modern technology and intelligence-gathering methods to improve border surveillance and prevent illegal activities such as smuggling, human trafficking, and terrorism.
He further emphasized that a well-equipped and properly coordinated BCDA would not only enhance security but also promote socio-economic development in border communities.
In conclusion, Dr. Ezugwu urged the Nigerian government to prioritize the reform of the BCDA as part of its broader efforts to address the country’s security challenges.
He expressed optimism that with the right measures in place, the agency could play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and prosperity of Nigeria’s border regions.
