The new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba AbdulAkeem Owoade, has officially commenced the 21-day traditional rites known as “Òrò Ìpêbí,” according to a statement released by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Rotimi Osuntola.
The announcement was made yesterday and marks the beginning of an important cultural ritual preceding Oba Owoade’s ascension to the throne.
The rites, which began on March 7, 2025, will continue until March 29, 2025. Highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of this tradition, the statement read, “The Aláàfin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of ÒRÒ ÌPÊBÍ, a crucial tradition that precedes His Imperial Majesty’s ascension to the esteemed throne.”
During this period, a curfew will be in place in Oyo township from 8 pm to 6 am daily. Movement will be strictly restricted within these hours, and violators will face arrest and detention until 7 am the following morning.
The Òrò Ìpêbí rituals require the Alaafin to enter a state of total seclusion, honoring a sacred tradition of the Oyo Kingdom.
Residents have been urged to respect this age-old custom as preparations build for the coronation ceremony of the new Alaafin, which is scheduled to take place on April 5, 2025, in Oyo town.
The Òrò Ìpêbí rites and the upcoming coronation underscore the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people and the reverence accorded to the Alaafin, the paramount ruler of the Oyo Kingdom.
