In a decisive statement during the National Executive meeting of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) held in Abuja on Thursday, Hon. Odunayo Ategboro, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT), refuted claims made by Mohammed Abubakar, who has been parading himself as ALGON’s Secretary-General.
Hon. Ategboro emphasized the illegitimacy of such claims, stating, “Looking at the critical stakeholders here, anybody outside there calling himself a Secretary-General, you should know it is criminal because you can’t get what you don’t have. Who appointed such a person as the secretary-general when you have 774 local governments in Nigeria on the same page with the leadership of ALGON?”
He he spoke while responding to questions from journalists, further clarifying that ALGON’s leadership structure remains intact, with the acting Director General and National President actively steering the organization. Ategboro dismissed Abubakar’s claims as impersonation, a criminal offense, and assured that legal action would be taken at the appropriate time.
Echoing these sentiments, Hon. Hamisu Mohammed, ALGON’s National Publicity Secretary, reiterated the organization’s constitutional principles. He explained that membership is strictly reserved for local government chairmen from Nigeria’s 36 states and area councils, with leadership positions determined through established processes.
“We don’t think that we have any other ALGON somewhere except this ALGON, and anybody that is parading himself is on his own,” Mohammed stated. He underscored the organization’s commitment to fostering a productive local government system in collaboration with state governors.
The ALGON leadership remains resolute in its focus on strengthening Nigeria’s local government system, dismissing distractions from unauthorized claims of representation.
