ABUJA, NIGERIA — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider resigning from office, citing what he described as the administration’s failure to fulfill key campaign promises and improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
The call was contained in a statement issued by the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) and signed by its spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, following Obi’s reaction to the planned resignation of the British Prime Minister.
In a post titled “Owning Up to Leadership Failures and Political Responsibility” on his X account, Obi argued that political leaders should be prepared to take responsibility when they fail to deliver on promises made to citizens.
Drawing a comparison between political developments in the United Kingdom and Nigeria’s current realities, Obi noted that the British Prime Minister’s decision to step down followed mounting public dissatisfaction over economic stagnation, rising living costs, and alleged failure to fulfill key electoral pledges.
According to him, such actions demonstrate a culture of accountability that should be embraced by leaders in democratic societies.
The former Anambra State governor recalled that before becoming President, Tinubu had repeatedly criticized previous administrations over insecurity and economic hardship, including calls for the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan during periods of national crisis.
Obi further noted that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu promised to improve electricity supply, combat corruption, strengthen national security, and enhance the welfare of Nigerians.
However, he argued that conditions across several sectors have deteriorated since then.
“Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, kidnappings continue unabated, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi stated.
He also expressed concern over what he described as declining performance in key sectors, including infrastructure, transportation, security, and anti-corruption efforts, maintaining that Nigerians are facing severe socio-economic challenges.
The NDC presidential candidate contended that a resignation by the President would reinforce the principle of political accountability and demonstrate that public office is a trust that demands measurable results.
He said such a step would help foster a governance culture rooted in responsibility, transparency, and service to the people, while discouraging impunity among public office holders.
Obi added that strengthening accountability in leadership remains essential to building a more prosperous and equitable nation, reiterating his belief that a better Nigeria is achievable through responsible governance.
The remarks are expected to spark fresh political debate as opposition parties and stakeholders continue to assess the performance of the current administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
