In a bold statement, The Leaders After God’s Own Spirit Initiating A New State (The LAGOSIANS) have denounced the National Assembly’s recent use of voice voting to proclaim a State of Emergency in Rivers State. The group described affront to democratic accountability and a blatant endorsement of executive overreach.
Speaking on behalf of The LAGOSIANS, spokesperson Mr. Yinka Sotade criticized the reliance on voice votes for critical national decisions, calling it a deliberate design of a flawed system. He argued that the 1999 Constitution, which he referred to as a “military decree masquerading as a people’s charter,” is the root cause of Nigeria’s democratic shortcomings.
“Voice voting is not a democratic error—it is a design feature of a system built to evade accountability,” Sotade stated. He emphasized that the National Assembly’s actions reflect the spirit of a constitution imposed by military fiat, alien to the diverse identities of Nigeria’s people.
The LAGOSIANS assert that the real threat to Nigeria’s democracy lies in its foundational structure. They advocate for the urgent revival and modernization of the 1963 Republican Constitution, which they believe is the only document rooted in the federalist consensus of Nigeria’s founding nationalities.
The group also calls for restructuring Nigeria into autonomous federating units based on local identities rather than artificial boundaries.
Dr. Bolaji O. Akinyemi, the initiator of The LAGOSIANS, highlighted the group’s mission to promote unity and equity in Lagos. He stressed the importance of addressing tribal hatred and ensuring the rights of all citizens, including those from other states and foreign residents, are protected.
The LAGOSIANS also pointed out the inconsistent application of State of Emergency laws throughout Nigeria’s history, from Balewa to Tinubu, as evidence of the legal ambiguity and political expediency that dominate national crises. They insist that superficial reforms are insufficient and call for a complete overhaul of the current system to reclaim Nigeria for “We the People.”
This statement underscores The LAGOSIANS’ commitment to fostering a just, stable, and prosperous nation through constitutional reform and true federalism.
