In a dramatic turn of events, the South-South Alliance for Prosperity has leveled serious allegations against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing it of colluding with Senate President Godswill Akpabio to facilitate the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The coalition claims that financial inducements were involved, raising concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral processes.
The press statement, signed by Udom Biriki James, Convener of the South-South Alliance for Prosperity, describes the alleged actions as a “catastrophic breach of trust” that undermines democracy.
The group has called for the immediate removal of INEC Chairman Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, citing a loss of public confidence in the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, known for her advocacy for transparency and accountability, has faced significant political opposition. The Alliance argues that the alleged collusion is an attempt to silence her voice and set a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The coalition has urged the federal government to investigate the allegations thoroughly and ensure that INEC operates independently, free from political interference.
“The time for action is now,” the statement concludes, calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant in protecting their democracy.
