…Cautions Against Temptation to Manipulate Justice for Parochial Interests
In a powerful address delivered in Abuja on Wednesday, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima called on Nigeria’s judiciary to remain unwavering in its commitment to justice, despite mounting pressures and blackmail.
Speaking at the maiden Body of Benchers Annual Lecture and the public presentation of the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee report, the Vice President emphasized the judiciary’s pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
“A nation is only as accountable, fair, and orderly as the people who make, enforce, and interpret its laws,” Shetima remarked, underscoring the judiciary’s responsibility as custodians of the law.
He cautioned against the temptation to manipulate justice for parochial interests, warning that such actions threaten the very foundation of society.
“Laws are not mere technicalities; they are the scaffolding of civilisation. Without laws, there is no order. Without order, there is no society. Every time justice is delayed, every time the law is bent to serve the interests of agents of anarchy, and every time institutions waver in the face of blackmail, we erode the very foundation of our nation. And if that foundation crumbles, no matter how high we have built, everything falls apart,” he stated.
The Vice President also commended the judiciary for its resilience, recalling its role in upholding the mandate entrusted to President Bola Tinubu amidst political blackmail.
He criticized the misconception that justice is determined by the loudest voices, describing it as one of the gravest errors in contemporary society.
As Nigeria navigates complex legal and political challenges, Shettima’s call to action serves as a reminder of the judiciary’s indispensable role in maintaining accountability, fairness, and order.
