OGUN2025: Governor Ododo Welcomes Torch of Unity Ahead of 22nd National Sports Festival

In a momentous ceremony underscoring the unifying power of sports, the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, officially received the National Unity Torch as part of the build-up to the highly anticipated 22nd National Sports Festival. The festival is set to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from May 16th to May 30th, 2025.
Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu, Governor Ododo emphasized the pivotal role of sports in fostering national unity and driving societal development.
In a statement released by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Unubi Emmanuel, the Governor highlighted the transformative impact of sports, describing it as a powerful tool for bringing people together across diverse backgrounds.
He reaffirmed Kogi State’s unwavering commitment to leveraging this opportunity to promote coexistence, exchange values, and showcase athletic excellence alongside other states.
Governor Ododo also assured that the Kogi State contingent is fully prepared to compete at the festival, with the state government pledging comprehensive support to ensure Team Kogi’s success. “We are determined to make our mark and emerge victorious,” he declared.
The ceremonial handover of the Torch of Unity was led by Ikana Mbora, a member of the National Sports Commission and leader of the torch tour.
She explained that the torch’s journey across all 36 states of the federation symbolizes national unity and serves as an open invitation for all states to participate in the festival. Kogi State marked the fourth stop on the torch’s nationwide tour, following its official flag-off by the President.
Mbora further assured that meticulous preparations are underway to ensure the festival’s success, with measures in place to guarantee a seamless and inclusive event.
Adding to the occasion, Mr. Haruna Jibo, Permanent Secretary of the Kogi State Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, expressed confidence in Team Kogi’s readiness.
He noted that extensive preparations are ongoing to ensure the team delivers an outstanding performance that will make the state proud.
The 22nd National Sports Festival, themed “OGUN2025,” promises to be a celebration of athleticism, unity, and cultural exchange. As the countdown begins, the Torch of Unity continues its journey, igniting the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie across the nation.
