Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), my mentor and role model, has etched his name in history as the first Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to adopt a truly multi-dimensional and holistic strategy in tackling drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria. Unlike the narrow “just say no” approach of past administrations, Brig. Gen. Marwa introduced comprehensive reforms aimed at harm reduction, public enlightenment, and institutional strengthening.
In just three years of visionary leadership, he has transformed the NDLEA into a proactive, efficient, and highly respected institution. Under his command, the agency has arrested tens of thousands of drug offenders, including several high-profile drug barons who once operated with impunity across the country. During the same period, over 3,400 convictions were secured, reinforcing the agency’s determination to ensure that justice is served.
Beyond law enforcement, Marwa recognized the need for compassionate intervention. More than 12,000 drug users have been successfully counseled, rehabilitated, and reintegrated into society through NDLEA’s various treatment programs. This people-centered approach marks a historic shift in Nigeria’s drug control strategy, earning widespread commendation both at home and abroad.
Today, thanks to his leadership, Nigeria is experiencing a new dawn in the war against drug trafficking and abuse. His relentless drive and strategic foresight have repositioned the nation as a serious player in the global anti-narcotics community.
In recognition of these outstanding contributions, Brig. Gen. Marwa has been showered with numerous national and international awards. Notably, he was honorued with the Distinguished Public Service Award by Vanguard Newspapers, and named Leadership Person of the Year by Leadership Newspapers, among other accolades from reputable institutions and media organizations.
Marwa’s achievements reflect the hallmark of true leadership — vision, courage, and compassion. His unwavering dedication continues to inspire not only the NDLEA workforce but also millions of Nigerians who now see a real possibility of a drug-free nation.
Thank you, my mentor, for your tireless service and for saving countless Nigerians from the devastating grip of drug abuse.
