In commemoration of World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Association of Female Comrades (AFC), a youth-led non-governmental organization committed to empowering young women and girls, launched a sweeping nationwide Pad Outreach Program from May 28 to 30, 2025.
The initiative aimed to break the stigma around menstruation, promote awareness about menstrual hygiene, and provide essential sanitary materials to girls and women across Nigeria.
Held annually on May 28, World Menstrual Hygiene Day serves as a global platform to highlight the challenges millions of girls face due to poor menstrual hygiene and lack of access to sanitary products. The AFC’s outreach this year spanned multiple Nigerian states, with thousands of sanitary pads distributed to schools and communities, accompanied by educational support and health-focused advocacy.
The outreach initiative was implemented through the AFC’s structured network of state chapters, each led by dedicated coordinators who organized localized distributions and educational sessions. The impact reached far and wide—from the heart of Abuja to remote parts of Ogun and Jigawa States—ensuring that the message of dignity and health resonated at both grassroots and urban levels.
In Ijero, Ekiti State, the distribution of 500 sanitary pads was overseen by Comrade Lateef Taiwo Sofiyah, the National Vice President of AFC. In the Federal Capital Territory, 100 pads were delivered to Government Junior Secondary School in Nyanya under the leadership of Comrade Sheidu Hauwa Eleojo. Girls Grammar School in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, not only received 200 sanitary pads but also educational books through the coordination of Comrade Babalola Elizabeth Olaitan.
The campaign made a significant footprint in Dutse, Jigawa State, where over 1,000 sanitary pads were distributed at the Government House’s Banquet Hall by Comrade Nana Fiddausy Hamza.
Other notable outreach activities included 700 pads at Margaret Mosunmola College in Owo, Ondo State; 300 pads at the Federal Girls Technology College in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; and 200 pads distributed across two schools in Kogi State. Nasarawa, Osun, Oyo, and additional locations in Ogun State also witnessed effective mobilization and impactful engagements.
The breadth and success of the campaign underscore the AFC’s unwavering dedication to addressing menstrual inequities and fostering inclusive education, healthcare access, and the safety of girls and women across the country. Each distribution site was not only a point of relief but also a platform for education and advocacy, led by passionate female comrades committed to changing the narrative around menstrual health.
Reflecting on the program’s achievements, Comrade Muniretu Isah, the National President of the Association of Female Comrades, commended the united efforts of state coordinators, volunteers, and supporters:
“This outreach is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we stand together for the dignity and health of our girls. I am deeply thankful for the passion shown by all our coordinators and volunteers. May we continue to grow in cooperation, commitment, and impact.”
As the AFC looks ahead, it reaffirms its mission to lead grassroots efforts that empower women, confront inequality, and cultivate societal well-being. The 2025 Menstrual Hygiene Day campaign stands as a testament to the organization’s vision for a more informed, inclusive, and compassionate Nigeria.
