Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has recorded a landmark achievement in the state’s healthcare and education sectors with the revival of the Faculty of Medicine at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba.

The development follows Governor Ododo’s swift intervention after the Igala Cultural Development Association (ICDA), led by Deputy Governor Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo, appealed to him on August 11, 2025, to address the accreditation challenges that had stalled the medical program for years.

Responding promptly, the governor facilitated the restoration of accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the MBBS program. This was followed by full approval from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), which now allows the university to admit its first set of 50 medical students for the 2025/2026 academic session starting in October.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams, described the approval as “a major victory for healthcare and medical education in the state,” noting that it reactivates medical training at PAAU and demonstrates the government’s resolve to expand access to quality healthcare education.

Observers say the milestone underscores the Ododo administration’s prioritization of both education and healthcare, with far-reaching benefits for Kogi State. The approval is expected to boost the state’s capacity to train more doctors locally, reduce medical workforce shortages, and improve health outcomes for citizens.
