Federal Ministry of Defence has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) T enhance space-based support for national security operations across the counAtry.
Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, made this known on Wednesday during a meeting with a delegation from NASRDA led by its Director General and Chief Executive, Matthew O. Adepoju. The meeting was held at the Ministry’s headquarters, Ship House, in Abuja.
The Minister underscored the strategic importance of proactive, intelligence-driven operations in tackling terrorism, banditry and trans-border crimes. He noted that satellite-enabled surveillance, radar imaging and signal analytics have become critical force multipliers in modern security architecture.
According to him, the integration of space-based technologies can significantly enhance situational awareness, support the identification of criminal routes and hideouts, and provide stronger operational backing to troops deployed on the frontline. He stressed the need for closer synergy between NASRDA and the Defence Space Administration to ensure seamless integration of national space assets into military operations.
Earlier in his remarks, Adepoju highlighted Nigeria’s existing space capabilities and its expanding international collaborations. He disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement process for additional satellites, including radar systems, as part of efforts to reinforce the nation’s security framework.
The NASRDA Director General further revealed that the agency has developed proposals for enhanced border surveillance and real-time intelligence support systems designed to improve environmental awareness and operational effectiveness. These concepts, he said, are tailored to strengthen national response mechanisms against evolving security threats.
Both institutions agreed to harmonize their efforts, eliminate duplication of mandates and develop a coordinated deployment framework to maximize the impact of space-based assets on national security operations. The meeting ended with a shared resolve to accelerate collaboration and leverage technological innovation to bolster Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, and the Director of the Joint Services Department, Mrs. Bosede Olaniyi.
