Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, has assured of his continued support for sporting activities in the country following his conferment with the award of Ambassador of Fair Play by the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association.
The award was presented during a courtesy visit by the Association to the Ministry of Defence. The Minister was not present at the event, but the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Richard Pheelangwa, received the award on his behalf alongside principal staff of the Ministry.
While receiving the award, the Permanent Secretary stated that the Minister is a sports lover and believes strongly in the benefits of sports to national peace and unity.
He added that the Minister enjoys and participates in various sporting activities, both indoor and outdoor, including golf, and will be glad to receive the award, assuring that he will continue to support sports activities.
Earlier, the All Federal Capital Territory Sports Association, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said the purpose of the visit was to collaborate with the Ministry of Defence to explore ways of taking sports, beginning from the Federal Capital Territory, to a level where it would begin to yield the desired results for the country as seen in developed economies.
According to him, the Association intends to promote sports in order to help transform the economic independence of citizens, empower youths, and reduce restiveness, noting that this would help to minimize criminality and promote peace in the country.
Representatives of different sports, including golf, softball/baseball, gymnastics and basketball, also spoke during the visit, expressing their desire to see the revival of sporting facilities in military barracks, noting that many talents are usually discovered in barracks due to the organized environment which makes them suitable for talent development.
Also present at the event was the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Maduka, along with staff of the Ministry of Defence.
