The Bauchi State chapter of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has strongly condemned what it described as a brutal assault on a journalist, calling for an immediate investigation and accountability from security authorities.
In a press statement issued by the State Chairman, Hon. Abdurrahman Yusuf Muazu (Sardaunan Boto), the party decried the alleged attack on Mr. Mohammed Adamu, a reporter with Albarka Radio. The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bununu, located in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state.
According to the PRP, the journalist was allegedly assaulted by police officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Jamilu Kabir, a Superintendent of Police. The party stated that the attack left Mr. Adamu with serious head injuries, describing the development as a disturbing reflection of the dangers faced by media practitioners in Nigeria.
โThe assault on a journalist performing his lawful duties is unacceptable,โ the statement read, stressing that such actions undermine press freedom and democratic accountability. The party noted that journalists play a critical role in informing the public, exposing wrongdoing, and strengthening democratic institutions.
The PRP further called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. It urged that all officers found culpable be held accountable in accordance with the law.
Reiterating the importance of a free and safe media environment, the party emphasized that journalists must be allowed to operate without fear of harassment, intimidation, or violence. It warned that continued attacks on the press pose a significant threat to Nigeriaโs democracy.
The party concluded by demanding immediate justice for Mr. Adamu and called on stakeholders across government and civil society to work collectively toward ensuring the protection of journalists and the preservation of press freedom in the country.
