The Nigeria Guild of Investigative Journalism (NGIJ) has urged Nigerians to uphold peaceful coexistence, cautioning political actors against exploiting religious and ethnic fault lines as the nation steadily moves toward the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday to commemorate the 2026 Eid al-Fitr celebration, and jointly signed by its National President, Malam Abdulrahman Aliagan, and National Secretary, Rowland Olonishuwa, the Guild congratulated Muslim faithful on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast.
The Guild observed that this yearโs Ramadan coincided with the Christian Lenten season, describing the convergence as a โrare and powerful symbolismโ that highlights shared moral values across religious divides.
According to the statement, both sacred periods emphasise reflection, sacrifice, discipline, and compassion, noting that these common principles should serve as a basis for fostering national unity.
โFor weeks, across mosques and churches, Nigerians prayed, fasted, gave to the needy, and sought a better version of themselves. If we can endure hardship together in pursuit of spiritual growth, then we can certainly live together in peace,โ the Guild stated.
However, NGIJ expressed concern over escalating tensions nationwide, warning that societal differences are increasingly being weaponised, particularly along religious and ethnic lines.
The Guild stressed that the lessons derived from Ramadan and Lent must extend beyond the festivities and be evident in the everyday conduct of citizens, urging Nigerians to demonstrate patience, empathy, and truthfulness in their engagements.
Addressing the political class, the organisation warned against emerging signs of divisive politicking ahead of the 2027 elections, including the proliferation of misinformation and fear-driven narratives.
โWe are already seeing early signs of the familiar playbookโdivisive rhetoric, calculated misinformation, and appeals to fear rather than reason. That path is dangerous and ultimately destructive,โ the statement read.
NGIJ further called on politicians, political parties, and aspirants to prioritise issue-based campaigns, particularly focusing on the economy, security, and governance, instead of resorting to identity politics.
It cautioned that power attained through division could erode national stability, emphasising that Nigeria cannot afford another electoral cycle that exacerbates existing societal fractures.
The Guild also reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and ethical journalism, pledging to continue confronting false narratives and exposing misinformation.
โA peaceful and informed society requires citizens who think critically and reject manipulation,โ it added.
The statement concluded by describing Eid al-Fitr not merely as a period of celebration, but as a test of collective responsibility, urging Nigerians to embrace unity over division in the interest of national development.
