The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has elected a new set of executives led by veteran trade unionist, Comrade Rasheed Adebayo Bamishe, with a strong declaration to reposition the party for victory in the 2027 general elections.
The emergence of Bamishe as chairman followed a consensus decision at the partyโs state congress held on Saturday at the Nigeria Union of Railwaymen in Surulere, Lagos. In his acceptance remarks, Bamishe pledged to unify party members and build on the gains recorded during the 2023 general elections.
He urged members to set aside internal differences and rally behind the new leadership, stressing that unity remains the partyโs strongest weapon in its quest to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
โIf we all come together, we can surpass the achievements of 2023 and send the ruling APC packing,โ Bamishe stated, calling for collective commitment ahead of the 2027 polls.
The newly elected state executive features a broad mix of party stakeholders and labour movement figures. Those elected include multiple deputy chairmen such as Comrades Adamu Adamu (TUC), Ofulue Havilla Eniola (NLC), Afiong L. Afiong, and Engr Momodu Saibu, alongside Madam Omowunmi Bajulaiye and Mr Emeka Ogbonna.
Dr. (Mrs) Anita Nana Okuribido emerged as State Secretary, while Comrade Abadom Amechi and Comrade Isaac Alale Isaac were elected Assistant Secretaries I and II respectively. Other key positions include Comrade Awosika Tolulope as Treasurer, Prince Victor Kosoko as Financial Secretary, and Comrade Tabansi Claribel as Publicity Secretary.
Additional members of the executive council include Comrade Fatimah Yussuf as State Organising Secretary, Barrister Kassim Osemene as Legal Secretary, and Comrade Vivian Ngozika Obiazi as State Auditor.
In the women and youth structures, Comrade Madam Dosumu Kemi was elected Women Leader, with Mrs Lorreta Onyeka and Comrades Lydia Olaoluwa and Chinyere Ewuzie serving as deputies. Comrade Oluwasegun Onifade emerged as Youth Leader, supported by Comrades Belinda Esoso Edebiri, Hon. Nifemi Adeyemi, and Comrade Charles Momodu as assistant youth leaders.
Speaking at the congress, Chairman of the occasion and former Deputy Chairman of the party in Lagos State, Comrade Tony Masha, cautioned members to brace for a โstrategic political battle,โ noting that power would not be relinquished easily by the ruling party.
He further advised that the choice of a Lagosian as party leader was a strategic move to foster inclusiveness and prevent feelings of marginalisation among indigenes in Lagos State and the wider South-West region.
Also addressing the gathering, Comrade Dagga Tolar of the Democratic Socialist Movement (DSM) reiterated the ideological roots of the Labour Party, emphasizing that it was founded by trade unions as a vehicle for the masses to attain political power and break free from economic hardship.
He urged members to mobilise effectively to ensure the partyโs electoral success, describing victory at the polls as the pathway to addressing poverty, homelessness, and social inequality.
The congress marks a significant step in Labour Partyโs reorganisation efforts in Lagos State as it intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
