The Obidient Movement has issued a strong appeal to the Supreme Court of Nigeria to expedite its ruling on the lingering leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress, warning that continued delay could erode democratic integrity and destabilise opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a press statement released on Saturday, and signed by its National Coordinator, Dr Yunusa Tanko, the Movement made what it described as a โpassionate appealโ for a swift judicial resolution of opposition-related cases currently before the apex court.
โThe apex court is the last refinery of justice,โ the statement declared, stressing that โat a time when the political landscape requires absolute clarity, any prolonged delay in pronouncing a final verdict on the ADC leadership crisis provides room for mischief, fuels factionalism, and undermines the preparations for a robust multi-party contest in the coming elections.โ
The group argued that the matter has transcended internal party concerns, evolving into a broader national issue with implications for Nigeriaโs democratic framework.
According to the statement, โthe legal battle between the contending factions is no longer a mere internal affair as it has become a matter of national interest which the apex court should be conscious of in its decisions.โ
Raising concerns about the implications of the unresolved dispute, the Movement pointed to what it described as a โcurrent leadership vacuumโ within the opposition coalition, noting that it has left โthousands of party faithful in a state of fluxโ and risks โdisenfranchising a significant portion of the electorate who look toward the ADC and its coalition partners as a credible alternative for national governance.โ
The statement further emphasised the urgency of the situation in light of the approaching electoral cycle. โAs the 2027 electoral cycle approaches, the continued ambiguity surrounding the partyโs executive structureโfollowing the courtโs decision to reserve judgment on April 22โthreatens not only the internal stability of the ADC but the broader viability of opposition consolidation in Nigeria,โ Tanko stated.
The Obidient Movement also highlighted the operational challenges the delay poses for electoral stakeholders, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It noted that both the electoral body and the Nigerian electorate require clarity on party leadership structures, especially as โprimary windows and coalition negotiations begin to take shape.โ
Reiterating its central demand, the Movement called for โan expedited and definitive ruling on the leadership dispute currently paralysing the African Democratic Congress,โ insisting that only a clear pronouncement from the apex court can stabilise the political environment.
โA swift and clear pronouncement from the Supreme Court will stabilise the political atmosphere and allow the ADC and the wider opposition movement to focus on the essential task of nation-building,โ the statement added.
Despite its concerns, the Movement expressed confidence in the judiciary, affirming its belief in the courtโs role as a protector of democratic values. โWe remain confident in the wisdom of the apex court and trust that the judiciary will remain the steadfast guardian of our democratic process,โ the statement concluded.
