The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly rejected the interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral umpire of acting under pressure from the Federal Government and aligning against the Nigerian people.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, , the party alleged that INECโs position reflects the influence of a government unsettled by the growing strength and momentum of opposition forces, particularly the ADC.
The party claimed that despite what it described as sustained efforts to weaken opposition parties and impose a one-party state, the ADC has continued to gain traction nationwideโan outcome it said has triggered anxiety within the ruling establishment.
โWe reject INECโs interpretation of the Court of Appeal ruling,โ the statement read. โWe knew that INEC was being pressured by a government that has become jittery from the ADCโs rising momentum even in the face of its relentless assault on all opposition parties.โ
The ADC further criticized INECโs official response to the court ruling, describing it as riddled with inconsistencies and lacking factual grounding. According to the party, the commissionโs stance contradicts both legal reasoning and established facts surrounding the case.
โINECโs press statement is full of contradictions that fly in the face of both facts and reason. We shall clarify these contradictions for all to see,โ Abdullahi stated.
The party went on to accuse the electoral body of abandoning its neutrality, alleging that INEC has effectively taken sides in the political contest.
โWhat is clear, however, is that INEC has caved to pressure and has chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people,โ the statement added.
While stopping short of announcing immediate action, the ADC disclosed that it is currently reviewing its options in response to the development and would soon communicate its next steps to the public.
โWe are currently reviewing our options, and we shall make these known soon,โ the party said.
The statement concluded with a rallying call to party members and supporters across the country, urging them to remain resolute amid the unfolding political developments.
โMeanwhile, we call on our members and all Nigerians to remain steadfast as they await further directives. Nigeria is rising. ADC is rising.โ
The development adds to the growing tension between opposition parties and the electoral commission ahead of future political contests, raising fresh concerns about institutional independence and the state of Nigeriaโs democratic process.
