Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a TikTok user, Udoma David Ekeh, for allegedly spreading false information about the Commission and its officers, in a development that underscores the agency’s intensified clampdown on misinformation and cyber-related offences.
According to a statement published on the Commission’s verified social media platforms, the suspect was apprehended following claims he made in December 2025, in which he alleged that operatives attached to the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC had been kidnapped by bandits while on official duty in Kwara State.
The Commission categorically dismissed the claims as “entirely fabricated,” noting that no such incident occurred. It further accused the suspect of using his TikTok platform to misinform the public and incite distrust against the agency’s ongoing anti-corruption operations.
EFCC officials stressed that the dissemination of such false narratives undermines public confidence and distracts from the Commission’s efforts in combating internet fraud and other financial crimes across the country.
In addition to the misinformation allegations, preliminary investigations have reportedly linked Ekeh to cyber fraud activities. The EFCC disclosed that the suspect was involved in a romance scam, allegedly operating through a Facebook account where he impersonated a foreign individual identified as “Garg Carta” to defraud unsuspecting victims.
The anti-graft agency confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and will be formally charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The arrest signals a broader warning from the EFCC against the spread of unverified information on social media, particularly content capable of inciting public panic or undermining national institutions.
