The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed that its nationwide presidential, governorship, National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly primaries will hold on May 29, 2026, despite logistical disruptions caused by the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and public holidays.
In a joint statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, and National Secretary, Barrister Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu, the party clarified that the original timetable of May 28 and 29 remains in force, but with adjustments to accommodate travel and administrative challenges affecting party officials and aspirants.
According to the statement, the non-availability of flights and transportation difficulties left several aspirants and members of screening committees stranded in Abuja after participating in the party’s screening exercise.
The party explained that May 28 would now be dedicated to arrivals, documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, consultations, and stakeholder meetings ahead of the primaries scheduled for May 29.
“The teams will use May 28 to also hold meetings with stakeholders, party elders, as well as aspirants in their respective states,” the statement read.
The leadership of the party, however, warned that no state institution or security agency, including the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), or INEC, is expected to participate in the internal meetings and activities fixed for May 28.
“No agencies of the state, viz: Police, INEC, DSS, etc., are to play any role in the programmes and meetings of May 28. Any activities carried out outside these guidelines would be unauthorized and deemed illegal,” the statement added.
The NDC also outlined the order of proceedings for the May 29 exercise, beginning with presidential affirmation, followed by National Assembly primaries and affirmations, State Assembly primaries and affirmations, and governorship primaries.
The party further disclosed that all results from the various states would be collated and processed by designated committees before being transmitted to the National Headquarters for official announcement by the National Working Committee (NWC).
“No state executive or team has the mandate to announce any results,” the party declared.
The leadership urged aspirants, delegates and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully during the exercise, stressing that the party would not tolerate violence, hooliganism or any form of disorderly conduct.
In a related development, the NDC also released the full list of members of its electoral committees for the conduct of the primaries across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The committees, made up of chairmen, secretaries and members, were constituted to supervise the State Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate, Governorship and Presidential primaries in all geopolitical zones of the country.
Among notable appointments, Prof. Osita Ogbu was named chairman of the Anambra State electoral committee, while Chief Teddy Obey will head the Enugu State committee. In Lagos State, Alhaji Sidi Abdul Bomi was appointed chairman, with Allison Oghenekaro Okoro serving as secretary.
Barrister Ojeh Jimmy was appointed chairman of the Ogun State committee, while Dr. Okey Ezeala will lead the Nasarawa State electoral committee. Former Commissioner of Police Ezebuike Peter (Rtd) was named chairman of the Kogi State committee, and Mainasara Sani Abubakar will oversee the Kano State exercise.
Other states across the South-East, South-South, South-West, North-Central, North-East and North-West zones also received committee appointments comprising party chieftains, legal practitioners, academics and political stakeholders.
The NDC leadership said the composition of the committees reflects the party’s commitment to conducting transparent, credible and peaceful primaries nationwide.
The party called on aspirants, delegates and party faithful to cooperate fully with the committees to ensure a smooth and successful nomination process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
