ASABA, DELTA STATE – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has commended the Delta State Police Command for the arrest of two suspected electric cable vandals and the recovery of vandalised cables, describing the operation as a significant breakthrough in the fight against the destruction of critical public infrastructure across the state.
The governor’s commendation followed the arrest of two suspects allegedly caught dismantling and stealing electric cables along the Ibabu–Ugiliamai Road in Delta State.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori praised the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, and officers and men of the command for their swift response and sustained efforts in combating criminal activities, particularly the vandalism of government-owned facilities.
The governor also lauded members of the local vigilante group for their collaboration with security agencies, noting that the successful operation underscored the administration’s determination to protect public assets and ensure that investments in infrastructure continue to benefit residents without disruption.
“The arrest of these suspects demonstrates the resolve of this administration to safeguard critical infrastructure and protect the resources that belong to the people of Delta State,” the statement said.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, operatives of the Kwale Police Station, working in conjunction with local vigilantes, acted on credible intelligence received on June 25, 2026.
The police team reportedly stormed the Ibabu–Ugiliamai Road, where the suspects were allegedly engaged in dismantling and stealing electric cables.
Upon sighting the security operatives, the suspects reportedly attempted to flee but were successfully apprehended during the operation.
Police identified the suspects as Osakwe Sunday, 28, and Ekene Obocha, 34. One of the suspects sustained injuries during the arrest and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, while the second suspect remains in police custody.
The vandalised electric cables were recovered and have been retained as exhibits as investigations continue.
Governor Oborevwori called on residents of the state to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing criminal activities and bringing offenders to justice.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and maintaining a safe and secure environment for all Deltans.
“The government will continue to work closely with security agencies and community stakeholders to ensure that public facilities are protected from criminal elements whose actions undermine development and public service delivery,” the governor stated.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, issued a stern warning to criminal elements involved in vandalising government infrastructure and other public assets, declaring that the command would intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute offenders.
He further appealed to members of the public to sustain their cooperation with law enforcement agencies by volunteering useful information capable of preventing crime and aiding investigations.
The latest arrests come amid growing concerns over the increasing cases of vandalism of public infrastructure, including electricity installations, telecommunications facilities and other government assets, which authorities say have contributed to disruptions in essential services and increased maintenance costs.
Security analysts have described the operation as a major boost to the state’s ongoing efforts to curb infrastructure-related crimes and enhance public safety across Delta State.
