ABUJA, NIGERIA — The inaugural WOW Africa Women’s Summit and Excellence Leadership Awards has celebrated exceptional African women who have distinguished themselves in leadership, entrepreneurship, humanitarian service, public service and community development, while calling for stronger policies to advance gender equality and inclusive leadership across the continent.
The high-profile event, held in Abuja on Thursday night, brought together women leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers, development advocates and professionals from across Africa to explore practical strategies for empowering women and strengthening their role in nation-building.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Founder of WOW Africa, Ginika Tor, described the initiative as a transformative platform established to spotlight the achievements of African women while inspiring a new generation of female leaders.
According to her, the vision for WOW Africa was conceived in 2018 following her participation in a leadership programme that motivated her to create an initiative capable of driving lasting social change across Africa.
“Our vision is to break barriers, strengthen collaboration among African women and inspire transformative leadership across the continent,” Tor said.
She noted that the successful debut of the summit reflected the growing demand for platforms that empower women, promote strategic partnerships and create opportunities for future generations of female leaders.
Tor Condemns Xenophobia, Urges African Unity
Addressing the issue of xenophobic attacks, particularly against foreign nationals in South Africa, Tor called on African governments and citizens to reject discrimination and embrace peaceful coexistence.
She stressed that Africans must view one another as partners in development rather than competitors if the continent is to realise its economic and social aspirations.
Tor also challenged governments, private sector organisations and development partners to move beyond symbolic celebrations of women by implementing practical policies that expand access to education, mentorship, funding and leadership opportunities.
“Africa’s future will be shaped by women who dare to rise, dare to lead and dare to transform their communities,” she declared.

A major highlight of the summit was a panel discussion themed “Raising Future Leaders: Empowering Young Women for Global Impact,” which featured accomplished women from public service, entrepreneurship, humanitarian work, youth development and public policy.
The panelists unanimously emphasised the need to mentor young women, build their confidence and equip them with practical leadership and entrepreneurial skills needed to compete successfully in an increasingly globalised world.
Lokpobiri Shares Journey of Resilience
Speaking during the summit, Mrs. Suzan Kiridi-Lokpobiri, wife of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) and Founder of the Reaching Every Adult and Child Foundation, shared her personal story of resilience and determination.
She recounted how she abandoned her childhood dream of becoming a banker after marriage but later found fulfilment in business, humanitarian service and politics.
Encouraging women seeking political office to remain steadfast despite challenges, Lokpobiri reflected on her own unsuccessful attempts to secure elective office despite winning party primaries.
“If you want to succeed in politics, you must keep pushing, remain focused and never give up. One day, your opportunity will come,” she advised.
Women Described as Pillars of Society
Also speaking, Dr. Nneoma Okorocha, wife of a former Governor of Imo State, underscored the importance of investing in women, describing them as the bedrock of families and society.
She argued that empowering women ultimately strengthens homes, communities and nations, while urging women to appreciate their value and continue supporting one another.
The speakers collectively commended WOW Africa for creating a movement that extends beyond conversations to inspire meaningful action, amplify women’s voices and create opportunities for emerging female leaders across Africa.
Outstanding Women Receive Leadership Awards
The summit concluded with the presentation of the WOW Africa Excellence Leadership Awards and certificates to outstanding women recognised for their exceptional contributions to leadership, entrepreneurship, humanitarian service, public service and community development.
The colourful ceremony also featured cultural entertainment, music and dance performances, including a special appearance by renowned singer Joy “Jodie” Eseoghene, adding a celebratory atmosphere to the landmark event.
The inaugural summit is expected to serve as a catalyst for stronger collaboration among African women and reinforce ongoing efforts to promote inclusive leadership, gender equality and sustainable development across the continent.
