UMUAHIA, Abia State — The race for the 2027 House of Representatives seat for Bende Federal Constituency is gathering momentum as Labour Party chieftain, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, has made a bold commitment to integrity in public office, declaring that he would never misappropriate public funds if elected to represent the constituency.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page that has attracted widespread attention across Abia State, Anyaso assured the people of Bende that his ambition is driven by service rather than personal gain.
“I will never steal from the people. Instead, I will gladly add my own to serve them better and improve their lives,” he declared.
The pledge has resonated strongly with many residents and political stakeholders, coming at a time when calls for transparent, accountable and people-centred leadership are becoming increasingly prominent ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The declaration follows a major stakeholders’ meeting in Igbere, where representatives from all 13 wards of Bende Federal Constituency unanimously urged Anyaso to contest the federal legislative seat. The endorsement is widely seen as a significant boost to his growing political profile.
Presenting the businessman and philanthropist at the gathering, the Abia State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, described the endorsement as a reflection of Anyaso’s proven leadership record and the confidence he has earned among the people through years of community engagement.
The wave of support has continued to expand across the constituency. Former elected councillors from the 13 wards also adopted Anyaso as their sole preferred candidate during a courtesy visit to his residence in Igbere. Speaking on behalf of the group, Coordinator Hon. Godwin Ndom said the decision was reached after what he described as a collective and conscientious assessment of the aspirant’s humanitarian contributions and commitment to grassroots development.
Reinforcing the philosophy behind his political aspiration, Anyaso recently told participants at a Harvard IFE Institute conference that character and accountability must remain the foundation of effective leadership.
“Leadership without character creates power without purpose,” he said. “The most valuable currency in leadership is not money; it is trust.”
Supporters argue that his longstanding philanthropic activities lend credibility to his campaign promises. Through the Chima Anyaso Foundation, he has partnered with a United States-based charity to establish community food banks across all 13 wards of Bende Federal Constituency, providing food support to vulnerable households and low-income families.
Political analysts say the initiative reflects the philosophy behind his pledge to “add my own to serve,” portraying him as a candidate committed to investing personal resources in community development rather than benefiting from public office.
The Bende Federal Constituency is currently represented by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, the emerging political contest has already triggered notable realignments within the constituency, including reports that one of the Deputy Speaker’s aides resigned earlier this year to publicly declare support for Anyaso’s aspiration.
A former deputy governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2023 Abia governorship election, Anyaso has also intensified consultations across political divides.
His recent engagement with APC chieftain Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu is viewed as part of broader efforts to build consensus around what he describes as a vision of purposeful, responsible and people-oriented representation.
He has also maintained that the principles of equity and fairness support the emergence of the next federal lawmaker from the Umunna Bloc, a position that has continued to generate debate within the constituency.
With endorsements spanning all 13 wards, growing cross-party support and a campaign centred on integrity, accountability and grassroots development, political observers believe the battle for the Bende Federal Constituency seat is already shaping up to become one of the most closely watched legislative contests in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
