ABUJA — The Federal Capital Territory chapter of OKAY A New Nigeria Movement has called for an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into the death of Mary Habila, a nurse who reportedly died at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, while also urging the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, to step aside pending an investigation into allegations linked to him and Adeniyi Adeyemi over the activities of an agency identified by the group as PFIPC.
The demands were made during a press briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, July 19, and addressed by the FCT State Chairman of the movement, Hon. Mathew Chinedu Chukwuemeka.
The group said the incidents underscore the need for greater transparency, accountability and public confidence in governance, insisting that Nigerians deserve full disclosure in matters involving senior public officials and institutions.
Addressing journalists, Hon. Mathew maintained that the reported death of Mary Habila at Senator Umahi’s residence raises critical questions that require a thorough investigation by relevant security and judicial authorities.
He said the movement sympathised with the deceased’s family and urged law enforcement agencies to establish the circumstances surrounding her death, ensure justice where necessary and prevent similar incidents in the future.
On allegations involving the Presidency, the movement cited public concerns over claims of financial impropriety connected to the Office of the Chief of Staff and the activities of an organisation it referred to as PFIPC.
According to the group, allowing an independent investigation to proceed without interference would strengthen public trust in government institutions. It therefore appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to either relieve the Chief of Staff of his duties or have him voluntarily step aside pending the outcome of any investigation.
The movement also expressed concern over what it described as worsening insecurity and increasing cases of kidnapping across the country, blaming the trend on broader governance challenges.
It called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property, warning that the electorate would ultimately assess the administration’s performance on security and governance during the 2027 General Elections.
Beyond its governance concerns, the group declared its endorsement of the presidential ticket of Mr. Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressing confidence that the duo possesses the capacity to address Nigeria’s security, economic and leadership challenges.
The movement also congratulated Mr. Obi on his birthday, commending what it described as his resilience and commitment to democratic ideals despite political pressures, while expressing optimism about his political future.
Reaffirming the organisation’s commitment to good governance, Hon. Mathew said leadership must be anchored on responsibility, accountability and service to the people.
“The people deserve systems that work for them. We trust that the President will take these concerns seriously and act in the best interest of the nation,” he stated.
As of the time of filing this report, there had been no official response from the Federal Ministry of Works, the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President or the Presidency regarding the issues raised by the movement.
