The South East Revival Group (SERG) has commended the judiciary over the Federal High Court judgment recognising former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, as the authentic All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Imo West Senatorial District, while urging him to desist from making public statements capable of undermining prominent Igbo political leaders, particularly former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.
The group, which described the judgment as a significant victory for democracy and internal party democracy, also congratulated Okorocha on his recognition as the Owelle Ndigbo, urging him to deploy his political influence towards strengthening Igbo unity and expanding the region’s national political relevance.
In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rt. Hon. Nnaemeka Aleke, SERG said the judgment delivered on Thursday, October 29, 2026, by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, under Justice Obiora Egwuatu, reaffirmed the judiciary’s responsibility as a defender of democratic principles and the rule of law.
The court, according to the group, nullified the nomination of Governor Hope Uzodimma and declared Okorocha the lawful APC candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District following its consideration of the primary election results and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s monitoring report.
SERG maintained that the decision was a victory for the people of Orlu Zone, internal party democracy and the credibility of electoral processes, particularly the importance of respecting official records generated by INEC.
The group argued that the judgment demonstrated that political influence and executive authority could not override constitutional provisions, electoral laws and verifiable election results.
It particularly cited the reported INEC record of 150,780 valid votes for Okorocha, describing the court’s reliance on documented primary election results as a reaffirmation that no political actor was above the law.
Congratulating the former governor, SERG described him as one of the few prominent Igbo political figures who had successfully established political, economic and humanitarian connections across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.
The organisation placed Okorocha alongside Peter Obi, noting that both leaders had, through different platforms and initiatives, contributed to building national bridges and promoting the interests of the South East beyond regional boundaries.
It specifically praised Okorocha’s humanitarian interventions through the Rochas Foundation, which provides free education to underprivileged children across different parts of the country, describing the initiative as an important instrument for promoting national unity and social inclusion.
According to SERG, Okorocha’s political engagements have also helped position the South East within the broader national political conversation without compromising the region’s identity and dignity.
However, the group expressed concern over what it described as Okorocha’s recent public utterances and political commentary, warning that attacks on prominent Igbo personalities could weaken the collective political strength of the region.
“We strongly advise the Owelle Ndigbo to immediately desist from demarketing Igbo aspirants and political stakeholders, particularly high-profile national figures like Peter Obi, whom the South East and the entire nation hold in high esteem,” the statement said.
SERG warned that continued public criticism and attempts to undermine respected South East leaders could erode the political credibility and goodwill Okorocha had built over the years.
It argued that political ambition and the pursuit of wider national acceptance should not come at the expense of solidarity among Igbo political stakeholders.
“Playing to the gallery by casting aspersions on fellow Igbo stakeholders to curry political favour elsewhere diminishes our collective strength as a people. A true bridge-builder does not pull down the pillars of his own homestead to construct bridges in distant lands,” the group declared.
The organisation urged Okorocha to recognise the importance of cooperation among influential Igbo leaders, stressing that the region’s political advancement would be better served by mutual respect, constructive engagement and strategic collaboration.
Meanwhile, SERG called on INEC to immediately update its candidate portal to reflect Okorocha as the APC candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in compliance with the court’s judgment.
It also urged the national leadership of the APC to respect the judicial pronouncement, maintain internal party harmony and uphold the outcome of duly certified primary election processes.
The group further appealed to residents, political parties and other stakeholders in Imo West to remain peaceful and law-abiding as political activities surrounding the senatorial contest continue.
Reaffirming its support for Okorocha following the court decision, SERG said the judgment had reinforced the importance of democratic accountability and respect for the rule of law, expressing confidence that the former governor would reclaim his mandate to represent the people of Imo West in the Senate.
The group stressed that beyond the immediate political implications of the judgment, the development should serve as an opportunity for greater political unity, stronger democratic institutions and a more coordinated South East engagement in Nigeria’s national affairs.
