Oyo NDE Takes Demand-Driven Skills to Doorsteps of Unemployed Youths

In a renewed effort to tackle the high rate of unemployment, support decent job creation, and encourage the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises in the rural areas of the country, the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Oyo State, through Its Community Based Business Training Scheme (CBBTS), has commenced a three month trainings in demand-driven skills for youths in Ologuneru Community, Gbopa, in Ibadan metropolis.

Addressing, the participants on behalf of the NDE Director General (DG), Mallam Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo, the acting State Coordinator, NDE Oyo State Mrs. Steve-Ogundipe Olayinka, noted that the training scheme was one of the laudable plans being implemented by the Federal Government through the agency, designed to train unemployed persons in businesses that have comparative advantage in developing communities so as to combat unemployment, create entrepreneurship and self-employment for local economy growth. The DG noted that “the Federal Government through the NDE Oyo State has constantly fulfill its mandate not only by generating employment among the ranks and files of unemployed youths in the State but also gives qualitative training for those living in the rural areas to create employment and decent work for all.”

Fikpo also pointed out that “the Micro and small enterprises play an important role in the economic development in Nigeria as it accounts for about 95 percent of domestic employment in rural communities.

He added that the Directorate designed the initiative through it’s Special Public Works Department so as to offer effective coping strategies for poor and vulnerable communities to strengthen their livelihoods and create new opportunities for decent work among the youths.

He commended the Ido Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sheriff Aderemi Adeojo, represented by Alhaji Bashir Adesiyan, and other stakeholders present for their unrelenting support and contribution towards the Scheme, as he urged the trainers to give the trainees the best stressing that community growth begins in the homes of its people.

Also speaking, the Director Special Public Works (SPW), Abuja, Mrs Roseline Olaomi, Who was represented by the head of SPW Department, Oyo State, Mr Adedotun Adu, explained that the orientation was put in place for 20 unemployed persons in each of the selected communities per state and the FCT bringing the total to 740 participants Nationwide. Olaomi also stated that the participants in the demand-driven skills for youths will be trained by experienced and seasoned trainers in Fashion Designing, Barbering and Hair Dressing for a period of 3 months.

She adviced the beneficiaries of the Programme to be regular in attendance and maintain a positive attitude as only those that are committed would be resettled.

Earlier, in his goodwill message, the Ido Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sheriff Aderemi Adeojo, thanked NDE Management for bringing the scheme to their community and promised to work hand-in-hand with the trainers to see to the success of the Scheme.
